The base layer sits against the skin and sets the tone for everything above it. Its job is not warmth but regulation — moving sweat off the body before it chills, and holding a thin, stable microclimate through changing effort. When the base fails, the whole system runs damp and cold; when it works, every layer above performs as designed.
